Bronze Vessel, 'Great Simuwu Ding'

This item is a replica of the Great Simuwu rectangular Ding. Normally, Ding is round and has three legs. The special shape shows this Ding has very high status. The original is 133 cm tall, and weighs over 800 kilograms. This is the largest bronze ancient relic unearthed in China. The Ding was unearthed in 1939 during the world war II. The founder tried to cut the Ding into smaller parts, so it would be easier to hide the Ding from japanese troops occupying the area. But the Ding was too sturdy, they only managed to cut one ear off. SImuwu was then buried and unearthed again in 1946. Now the original is collected in the National Museum in Beijing.
The Simuwu Ding is decorated with various Motifs. On both ears, two tigers are holding a human head. Inside of the Ding, engraved the inscription "Si Mu Wu". This tells us the Ding is made for a mother named Wu.

Three main categories of bronze artifacts exist: ritual vessels, luxury items and sometimes placed in tombs and weapons. Production quality peaked in the late Shang (B.C. 1600~B.C.1100) period. One characteristic form was the Jue, a ritual vessel standing on three legs, apparently intended for the warming of wine. The surfaces of most ritual vessels were commonly covered with stylized surface decoration. The most common motif was a mythical creature lacking a lower jaw known as the taotie mask. Many vessels carried inscriptions indicating why they had been cast and explaining their intended use.

The bronze replicas are made with the same lost wax method as the Shang artisans used thousands of years ago. Each item is modeled off the historical relic. Some original size products’ molds are from the original relics provided by Zhou Yuan Bronze Museum.
